Diffract is a desktop application for comparing files and folders on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Beyond side-by-side code diffs with multiple algorithms and syntax highlighting, it compares entire directories, binary files in a hex view, images, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PDFs - including a PDF engine written from scratch. It adds three-way merge, a Git commit browser, remote comparison over SSH, S3, and FTP, a right-click “Compare in Diffract” entry in Explorer and Finder, and a headless CLI for pipelines. Diffract works fully offline with no account required. The free tier has no time limit; Diffract Pro is a one-time $34 purchase with no subscription. Diffract is built by Kevin Jung, a solo developer in Germany.

The story

Diffract is built by Kevin Jung, an embedded-systems developer in Germany who compares files all day - code, config dumps, the occasional PDF or spreadsheet - and never found a desktop tool he liked. He started building his own on weekends, and it grew into a full comparison suite. Diffract is deliberately not a SaaS: it runs fully offline, requires no account, and Pro is a single one-time purchase.
